Pharmacogenetic Testing

Ms. Deignan uses Genomind Professional PGX at patients’ request to help guide treatment decisions. This is a technology called Pharmacogenetic Testing.

Genomind will analyze a sample of your DNA (from a mouth swab) to determine a few things, including how your body likely processes different medications, how you likely respond to some antidepressants, and offers precautions based on how your body is likely to respond to some medications.

Phamacogenetic testing is a guide to help inform treatment decisions.

  • Genomind will ship a collection kit to you for your sample.
  • Your insurance may cover a portion of the test.
  • You may be responsible for a co-payment that is paid directly to Genomind. Ms. Deignan does not charge any additional fees for this test, and it is considered part of your virtual on in-person office visit.
  • There are two versions of this test: the Full Mental Health Report or the Core Depression and Anxiety Report. Some insurances prefer one over the other.

What is gene testing for medication?

Pharmacogenetic testing is a useful tool for choosing medication, however, it has several limitations, and does not guarantee any specific medication will work or not have side effects.  A comprehensive review of past treatment, accurate diagnosis, and family history are all important factors in choosing a medication.

In general, this type of testing works best to predict treatment response for medications used to treat depression and anxiety.  This test will also offer their predictions of response to ADHD medications, mood stabilizers for bipolar disorder, and a variety of other types of medication used to treat mental health issues.
